Female TV Anime Directors Fall 2020

Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle
Director(監督): Mitsue Yamazaki
Assistant Director(副監督): Sumie Noro

Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle is Mitsue Yamazaki’s 6th series in the lead director role, following her adaption of How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? She debuted as a series director on the Hakkenden TV anime, but worked as an assistant director on Kurenai and Mawaru Penguindrum. Her most well known directorial project was Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun. She got her first original project in Tada Never Falls in Love in 2018.

Sumie Noro fits into her first assistant director role, having contributed significantly to Yamazaki’s Tada Never Falls in Love and How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? She has been a regular contributor to Dogakobo productions including New Game!! and Sing Yesterday for Me.

The two of them are adapting a comedy manga about a princess captured by the demon lord. While held captive, all she wants is a good night’s rest, and explore the Demons’ castle for ways to improve her sleep.

I’m Standing on a Million Lives
Director(監督): Kumiko Habara

Kumiko Habara debut’s as the head director in an adaption of the manga I’m Standing on a Million Lives. She has two previous runs as an assistant director covering vastly different content. She was first hired for the role for 12-sai, a schoolgirl romance series. She then served in the role for Angolmois, a violent historical series about defending Japan from invaders. Habara has been directing and storyboarding episode of anime since at least 2001, beginning with Angel Tales. Her most significant contributions are to children’s anime, including YugiohDetective Conan, and Pripri Chii-chan. She recently also worked on Infinite Dendrogram and the new adaption of Fruits Basket.

I’m Standing on a Million Lives is a manga where its cast gets transported to a fantasy video game world. However, the main character is forced to complete quests in the class of Farmer.

Haikyuu!! To the Top 2nd Cour
Director (監督): Masako Sato
Assistant Director(副監督 ): Mariko Ishikawa

The second half of the new season of the popular volleyball series returns with its new director team. Masako Sato made her debut as a series director two years ago on the cheerleading series Anima Yell! She is not a stranger to the series however, having storyboarded episodes in both the first, second, and third seasons of Haikyuu!!

Mariko Ishikawa remains the assistant director on the series, first entering the role in the second season (though with a slight title change: now 副監督 vs. 助監督 previously). Much of her career includes key animation and episodic animation supervision on series like GintamaAikatsu!, and Welcome to the Ballroom.

The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc
Director (監督): Risako Yoshida

Risako Yoshida first became a series director on the semi-short TV anime Diabolik Lovers,  working as an assistant director under Shinobu Tagashira for the first season, then taking over the second season herself. Her next major project was much bigger – she was hire to direct the 2017 Mahouka film and continued in the role for this new season. She most recently directed Lostorage Conflated WIXOSS TV anime.

Returning for the third season of Mahouka, continuing the light novel adaption of students at a magic school segregated by magical ability.
