Female TV Anime Directors Spring 2021

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun 2nd Season
Director (監督): Makoto Moriwaki

Makoto Mariwaki continues to flex her kids comedy chops with the second season of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun. The series follows the titular Iruma whose parents sell him to a demon. The demon adopts him as his grandson and sends him to the local school for demons.

Moriwaki has been active in the anime industry for decades, much of it with kids series including Onegai My Melody and PriPara. She was also director of the first two seasons of the crude comedy series Tantei Opera Milky Holmes.

Koi to Yobu ni wa Kimochi Warui
Director (監督): Naomi Nakayama

Koikimo is about an adult womanizing salaryman who falls in love with a high school girl and stalks her.

Much of Naomi Nakayama’s career is tied to studio Madhouse, serving as assistant director on two very different projects: Casshern Sins and Kobato. She mostly worked as an episode director and storyboard artist until Orange in 2016 which she debuted as series director (シリーズディレクター) with Hiroshi Hamasaki as the main director (監督). For the Orange: Mirai film version, her title was upped to Chief Director (チーフディレクター).

Blue Reflection Ray
Director (監督): Risako Yoshida

Risako Yoshida first became a series director on the semi-short TV anime Diabolik Lovers,  working as an assistant director under Shinobu Tagashira for the first season, then taking over the second season herself. Her next major project was much bigger – she was hire to direct the 2017 Mahouka film and continued in the role for the following season. She also directed Lostorage Conflated WIXOSS TV anime.

Blue Reflection Ray is an original anime for Gust’s Blue Reflection magical girl video game series as part of a three part multi-media project including a mobile game and a new console game.

The Way of the House Husband
Director (監督): Chiaki Kon

Chiaki Kon has the unfortunate distinction of being tasked to direct an animated series with little animation as mandated by its producers. The Way of the Househusband follows a man who quits the yakuza to become a homemaker to support his wife.

Kon’s career as a director began with an adaption of a horror visual novel, Higurashi. Since then she’s has projects going nearly annually, and occasionally multiple in a year. Her projects range from boys love, to light novel adaptions, to children’s anime. In the past few years, Kon has a gotten a number of movies under her belt, as well as credits working on the Crystal arc of the re-adaptation of the legendary Sailor Moon manga.

Burning Kabaddi
Assistant Director (監督補佐): Miyuki Kaieda 

Burning Kabaddi is an adaption of the manga of the same nave covering the sport Kabaddi.

This series is Miyuki Kaieda’s (海江田美幸) first turn in an assistant director role. She had previously worked as an episode director and storyboard artist on Outburst Dreamer Boys and the Bakugan series.


I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level
Assistant Director (助監督): Nanase Tomii

I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level is an adaption of a light novel about an office worker who dies from overwork. She is reborn in a RPG fantasy world and granted immortality and chooses to live a simple life. After 300 years of only kills a small number of slimes each day, she discovers she has hit level 99.

Previously, Nanase Tomii had worked on projects including Naruto and Babylon. This is her first series in an assistant director role.
