Pokemon (2019)
Director (監督): Maki Kodaira

Maki Kodaira makes her debut as an anime series director for the upcoming new season on Pokemon. She takes the reigns from previous director Daiki Tomiyasu, who now serves in the chief director role (総監督). The new series will coincide with the release of the Pokemon Sword & Shield but rumors suggest the series will visit multiple regions.

Kodaira was assistant director for the previous season, Pokemon Sun & Moon. She began her career at Seven Arcs working on series such as Nanoha, Dog Days, and Asura Cryin’. She has also worked on other kids anime including Yugiohi, Naruto, and Boruto. Female TV Anime Directors Summer 2019

How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?
Director (監督): Mitsue Yamazaki

How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? is Mitsue Yamazaki’s 5th series in the lead director role, following her original series Tada Never Falls in Love. She debuted as a series director on the Hakkenden TV anime, but worked as an ssistant director on Kurenai and Mawaru Penguindrum. Her most well known directorial project was Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun. Yamzaki’s wost recent work can be found in storyboards for the Wataten.

For this series, Yamazaki is adapting an informative comedic manga about weightlifting and exercise, somewhat of a deviation of her previous work. She is also handling sound direction for the series for the first time.

Driector (監督): Hikaru Yamaguchi

Hikaru Yamaguchi makes her TV anime debut as a director with an adaption of the manga Given, after directing short web anime EschaChron in 2017. In her career, she has contributed to series including Aikatsu! and Gintama, and was a regular storyboard artist and episode director for Osomatsu-san, including participating in the film.

Given is a musical BL series that will be broadcast on the NoitaminA block. Yamaguchi is supported in the series by a number of female creators including series composer Yuniko Ayana, character designer and animation director Mina Oosawa, and music composer Michiru.

Wasteful Days of High School Girls
Assistant Director (監督補佐): Saori Tachibana

Serving under chief driector Takeo Takahashi and director Sanpei Hijiri, Saori Tachibana works as the assistant director for Joshikousei no Mudazukai, a comedy about high school girls with various rotten personalities. Typically working as “橘さおり” she is credited as “橘紗央莉” for this project.

Tachibana’s director work has been limited to a couple of shorts: Miss Bernard Said and Love is Like a Cocktail, both with studio Creators in Pack. She also contributed as an episode director for Little Witch Academia and Citrus.

Hey! Your Cat Ears are Showing Season 2
Director (監督・演出) : Chiaki Kanno

Hey! Your Cat Ears are Showing is an adaption of a Chinese comic. The story follows and unsuccessful comic creator who suddenly meets a boy with cat ears.

The first season of this short series was Chiaki Kanno’s debut as a series director. Much of her earliest work came as an in-between animator for a number of Studio Deen projects including SankareaHakkenden, and Sakura Trick. Kanno wrote a Japanese manual for the animation program TVPaint, developed by a French Company. Fittingly, she works on this project with the Japanese studio monofilmo which specializes in using TVPaint.

Assistant Director (助監督) : Maimu Matsushima

Maimu Matsushima receives her first opportunity as an assistant director on Kunihiro Ikuhara’s new project, Sarazanmai. She is third on the senority chart with Ikuhara has the main director (監督) and Nobuyuki Takeuchi as Chief Director (チーフディレクター). Prior to working on Sarazanmai, most of Matshima’s work was key animation on series like the Idolmaster and Wake Up, Girls! She also did some costume design work for Wake Up, Girls! Additionally, Matsushima was an animation supervisor for an episode of Jinsei.

Sarazanmai is an original anime following three middle school students who get transformed into kappa and are tasked with taking shirikodama from zombies.

Female TV Anime Directors Winter 2019

Director (監督): Kaori

Kaori made her debut as a series director an adaption of Mikami Komata’s Yuyushiki comedy manga in 2013. Since then, she also directed the cute series How to Keep a Mummy and served as assistant director for the high energy Scorching Ping-Pong Girls. She was also involved as a director for the Bottom Biting Bug shorts.

With Endro~! Kaori gets her first completely original series. She also gets a stellar supporting cast with series composition from comedy expert Takashi Aoshima, (Yuru YuriHimouto! Umaru-chan), original character designs by Namori, the creator of Yuru Yuri, and adapted character designs by Haruko Iizuka (Umi Monogatari, Tamayura).
