Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle is Mitsue Yamazaki’s 6th series in the lead director role, following her adaption of How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? She debuted as a series director on the Hakkenden TV anime, but worked as an assistant director on Kurenai and Mawaru Penguindrum. Her most well known directorial project was Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun. She got her first original project in Tada Never Falls in Love in 2018.
Sumie Noro fits into her first assistant director role, having contributed significantly to Yamazaki’s Tada Never Falls in Love and How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? She has been a regular contributor to Dogakobo productions including New Game!! and Sing Yesterday for Me.

This year’s new Precure series marks a surprising first – a woman is directing the year-long television series. While a number of Precure movies have been directed by women – including the talented Rie Matsumoto, industry constant Chiaki Kon, and even Yoko Ikeda herself – the girls’ anime series have never had a woman at the helm. It’s not just the director role – almost all the current roles listed are women, with the ABC Animation producer as the lone exception.
Ikeda has been in the industry for decades, with The Case File of Young Kindaichi Returns as her most recent TV series director role. The Fall 2016 anime has 5 women in a “Director” role, 1 in a “Series Director” role, and 5 in an “Assistant Director” role, for a total of 11 women directing kids and TV anime series. For comparison, 12 is the annual average number of women in these role for late night TV series for the past four years. There’s a lot of women directing this season.
